CD Review Cal-Country Magazine
Von Cotton has developed an identifiable sound that borrows from an unusual variety of artists, from Willie Nelson to Radiohead. This 'progressive' approach, as lead singer and Bakersfield native, Brant Cotton, suggests, sets them apart from the artists which are now on the charts, and finds its inspiration in the early seventies songwriting style, with powerful lyrics and melodies reminiscent of Dylan and Croce. It's apparent that there is a rather dark vibe underlying the lyrical content of the songs. As Brant Cotton puts it, "I never really write to preach, or purposefully write a message, but upon reviewing the material, the overwhelming theme tends to be 'regret'. "Supernatural", "Pretty Little Mess", Man of the Morning March", and "I'll Do the Same" are clearly the 'Damn...why did I do that? type of tunes." Musically, the nine songs embedded within this CD take the listener on a journey that reveals California's own colors, from desrt-rock to surfer-folk, while a mature vocal performance reminds you of Cat Stevens, with a vocal timbre coated in old-school country. Although Von Cotton's main focus doesn't seem to be that of 'shocking audiences with the next pop-smash, a couple of the songs("Celo and Supernatural") show radio-potential and compatibility with mainstream formats. The saloon-inspired two-step, "johnny Walker", has already landed a licensing deal for it's use in film. This hard-gigging quintet is currently in the studio with record producer Robie Porter, to cut tunes for thier next release. While shopping for a label deal, the band is planning to travel to Afghanistan to perform for the troops. As singer Brant Cotton reminds us "Von Cotton is quite busy right now...but, in a good place".
